Field extension

A field extension is the embedding of a field ๐พ in a larger field ๐ฟ, ring i.e. a Ring monomorphism ๐พ โ†ช๐ฟ or equivalently ๐พ is a Subfield of ๐ฟ. We write ๐ฟ :๐พ, and ๐ฟ is thence called an extension field of ๐พ. Then ๐ฟ may be regarded as a vector space over ๐พ, see Extension field as a unital associative algebra, and its dimension is called the degree of the extension, denoted [๐ฟ :๐พ] =dim๐พโก๐ฟ.

A degree 2 extension is called a Quadratic extension, a degree 3 extension is called a Cubic extension, &c.
