OIcel i-stems
OIcel inherits PGmc i-stems with the following paradigm
| case | masc.sg. | masc.pl. | fem.sg. | fem.pl. |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| nom | gest-r | gest-ir | ǫxl-° | axl-ir |
| gen | gest-s | gest-a | axl-ar | axl-a |
| dat | gest-∅ | gest-um | ǫxl-° | ǫxl-um |
| acc | gest-∅ | gest-i | ǫxl-° | axl-ir |
A large group of masculine nouns within this class take the ending -ar in sg.gen, e.g. vin-ar (sg.gen vinr ‘(male) friend’). As with OIcel ō-stems, some feminine nouns retain the ending -u in dat.sg, e.g. strǫndu (dat.sg < strǫnd ‘beach’). It is also possible to see the ending -i in masc.sg.gen as with OIcel a-stems.
