PGmc declension
Nouns
The declension of nouns varied depending on the stem class. The distribution of PGmc noun stem classes and gender was as follows1
- PGmc a-stems < PIE o-stems: masculine, neuter;
- PGmc ō-stems < PIE ah₂-stems: feminine;
- [[PGmc ī
jō-stems]] < [[PIE ih₂yah₂-stems]]: feminine; - PGmc i-stems: all three genders (few neuters);
- PGmc u-stems: all three genders (few neuters, fairly few feminines);
- PGmc n-stems: all three genders (few neuters);
- PGmc r~n stems: two neuters;
- PGmc r-stems: two masculine, three feminine (kinship terms);
- PGmc z-stems: neuter;
- PGmc miscellaneous stems: all three genders (few neuters).
