PGmc declension

Nouns

The declension of nouns varied depending on the stem class. The distribution of PGmc noun stem classes and gender was as follows¹

• PGmc a-stems < PIE o-stems: masculine, neuter;
• PGmc ō-stems < PIE ah₂-stems: feminine;
• [[PGmc ījō-stems]] < [[PIE ih₂yah₂-stems]]: feminine;
• PGmc i-stems: all three genders (few neuters);
• PGmc u-stems: all three genders (few neuters, fairly few feminines);
• PGmc n-stems: all three genders (few neuters);
• PGmc r~n stems: two neuters;
• PGmc r-stems: two masculine, three feminine (kinship terms);
• PGmc z-stems: neuter;
• PGmc miscellaneous stems: all three genders (few neuters).
