OIcel declension of adjectives
As in other Germanic languages, OIcel adjectives had strong and weak declensions, with the declension used usually depending on the definiteness of a noun.
Strong
As in German, the endings of the strong paradigm follow those of the OIcel definite article and OIcel pronominal inflection closely.1
| №.case | masc | fem | neut |
|---|---|---|---|
| sg.nom | spak-r | spǫk-° | spakt |
| sg.gen | spak-s | spak-rar | spak-s |
| sg.dat | spǫk-um | spak-ri | spǫk-u |
| sg.acc | spak-an | spak-a | spǫk-° |
| pl.nom | spak-ir | spak-ar | spǫk-° |
| pl.gen | spak-ra | spak-ra | spak-ra |
| pl.dat | spǫk-um | spǫk-um | spǫk-um |
| pl.acc | spak-a | spak-ar | spǫk-° |
These endings occur on certain determiners and on adjectives in the absence of strongly declined determiners, including predicative usage.
Weak
As in German, the endings of the weak paradigm show much less variation. As the name suggests, the endings follow those of OIcel n-stems in the singular.2
| №.case | masc | fem | neut |
|---|---|---|---|
| sg.nom | spak-i | spak-a | spak-a |
| sg.gen | spak-a | spǫk-u | spak-a |
| sg.dat | spak-a | spǫk-u | spak-a |
| sg.acc | spak-a | spǫk-u | spak-a |
| pl.nom | spǫk-u | spǫk-u | spǫk-u |
| pl.gen | spǫk-u | spǫk-u | spǫk-u |
| pl.dat | spǫk-um | spǫk-um | spǫk-um |
| pl.acc | spǫk-u | spǫk-u | spǫk-u |
These endings occur on a handful of determiners and on adjectives in the presence of strongly declined determiners.
