Raising and lowering of indices

Let be a Semi-Riemannian manifold. The metric on specifies an isomorphism between the space of vector fields and the space of 1-forms by so-called raising and lowering of indices.

Given a vector field , we can define

This is consistent since by definition . Iterating this process, we can raise and lower arbitrary indices of any tensor field.
